Description
Following the collapse of the United States, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization realized that is needed to expand its influence to more countries. As the world was left with a global power vacuum in places such as the Pacific, the Americas, and the Atlantic, many countries, after the power surge, joined NATO, despite their not being in the North Atlantic. The Supreme Allied Commander stated: "If they benefit the stability of Europe, and the overall alliance, then yes, they can become a member of NATO." Countries like the recently unified Korea, Japan, Australia, and India became NATO members quickly following the United States' collapse, lest they fall to the now ambitious armies of the Soviet Union, while other countries, such as Australia, South Africa, Nigeria, and many South American countries joined later, most of which while embroiled in a communist revolution. NATO now has a large presence in African, and Pacific affairs, and after the collapse of the Soviet Union, NATO continued to grow, with African, South American and Middle Eastern countries gaining membership in the alliance.
